Oral surgery or extractions include the removal of teeth or any lesion in the mouth region.Extractions are generally performed by a general dentist but dentists may refer complex extractions and any pathology to specialists known as an oral maxillofacial surgeon. Extractions usually involve numbing the concerned area and removal of the tooth using forceps and elevators. At times, the bone and the gum need to be cut to remove the tooth and sutured up. The most common reason for extractions is a deep hole in your tooth that causes pain and cannot be saved for various reasons. Removing a tooth creates a space in the jaw, which may or may not need a replacement.

The general process of tooth removal by a dentist may include the following:

  • Obtaining an OPG or a small X-ray (Periapical radiograph) to assess the shape, size, position of the tooth and anatomical structures
  • Applying a numbing cream (topical anesthetic) and a local anesthetic (needle)
  • Checking the area for numbness
  • Making the tooth loose using various instruments
  • Removing the tooth using forceps
  • Placing a gauze on the area
  • Giving post-operative instructions and painkillers or antibiotics if necessary
