Why choose sedation dentistry?

You man choose sedation dentistry if you are anxious or fearful about going to the dentist. Sedation dentistry also allows more dental work to be accomplished during a single visit, which can be a good reason to choose sedation dentistry if you have limited time available. Sedation dentistry allows you to comfortably undergo dental work ranging from a routine cleaning to more extensive reconstruction.

Who is a candidate for sedation dentistry?

Most dentists limit the use of sedation to adults, although others will offer sedation to teens or children. If you are in good overall health, you are likely a good candidate for sedation dentistry.

What are the different types of sedation available?

Your medical history, and other factors are help for choosing the type of sedation for you. The options include:
1.Oral conscious sedation, in which pills are taken to make you feel comfortable, at ease, and relatively unaware of the dental treatment as it occurs.
2.IV sedation is the delivery of sedatives and pain medications intravenously, through a vein in your hand or arm. It offers a deeper level of sedation.
3.General anesthesia, the deepest level of sedation, is usually reserved for patients undergoing extensive dental work. You will sleep through the procedure, and will not remember it.

Will I be asleep?

Despite the name ‘sleep dentistry’ the sedation does not cause you to fall asleep during treatment, rather, you will be in a relaxed state. Many patients do fall asleep while in the dentist’s chair as a result of their relaxed, tranquil mood.

What happens at the end of the appointment? How will I feel?

You will need someone to drive you home, as you may feel sleepy or groggy until the sedative wears off completely, which may take as long as 24 hours. Get plenty of rest and take it easy.

Is sedation dentistry safe?

Absolutely. Sedation dentistry has been used safely for millions of dental procedures over more than three decades.

Will I feel any pain during the dental procedure?

No! sedation combined with anesthesia and pain medication means that dental work performed  is pain-free. Most patients feel no discomfort at all during their procedure. After the sedation wears off, you feel surprisingly good, often with no trace of pain.
